When Lindsay graduated with her Bachelor’s in Nutrition and Food in 2017, she knew she wanted to eventually pursue becoming a Registered Dietician (RD). In the summer of 2023, Lindsay decided it was time to take the next steps towards achieving that goal. She found an RD/MPH dual degree program she wanted to apply for but realized she was missing several key science prerequisite courses the program required – classes like Anatomy and Physiology, Microbiology, and Organic Chemistry.

Lindsay was initially disappointed that she'd have to complete over a year of on-campus courses at her local community college. She explained, "These science classes fill up quickly, so there was even the chance that I wouldn’t be able to get into the classes because they would be full." However, after talking with a practicing RD who had taken some prerequisites online, Lindsay discovered StraighterLine's affordable online science courses. With the monthly membership fee of $99 and most of the courses she needed priced at $79 (including eTextbooks), the math just made sense.

“I calculated that if I were to complete the courses in a month, then I could save thousands of dollars. Plus, I love that I can complete the classes faster than on a traditional 16-week semester system and can do the classwork at my own time of day.” - Lindsay D.

Prerequisite Courses for a Registered Dietician Program

Lindsay has already finished both Anatomy and Physiology I and II as well as Microbiology through StraighterLine, and she’s currently taking Organic Chemistry I. She plans to complete Organic Chemistry II by the end of February, then will apply to start her RD/MPH program in summer 2024.

The Benefits of Taking Online Courses with StraighterLine

StraighterLine is great for people who are highly motivated and driven with a specific scholastic or career goal in mind. By taking online courses through StraighterLine you can complete your coursework faster for less money than a traditional college route.

Lindsay currently works as a certified nutrition and cooking instructor and is well on her way to achieving her goal of becoming a Registered Dietician. Her story is one of many that demonstrate how online courses can help motivated students connect to their next career.
