Capella University: a Partner College Profile

Barry Lenson

Are you interested in using your StraighterLine college credits to earn a degree at another institution? If so, great.  It is simple to transfer them via the American Council on Education.

But StraighterLine offers some other attractive options too, through programs with 11 Partner Colleges (we are adding more soon). All are top-quality, accredited institutions that have agreed to accept StraighterLine college credits directly, with no need to send transcripts or go through a complicated college admissions process.

Today, we’d like to profile one of our excellent Partner Colleges – Capella University.

The History of Capella University . . .

Capella University was the inspiration of Stephen Shank, former CEO of Tonka Corporation, who felt that many adults were underserved by traditional universities. He envisioned a high-quality university that people could attend from any location.

In 1991, Shank established the corporate entity that would become Capella Education Company. In 1993, Dr. Harold Abel, an experienced leader in higher education and former president of three universities, joined Shank to found The Graduate School of America, now called Capella University. Originally, the university offered online masters and doctoral degrees in management, education, and human services. Today, Capella offers undergraduate, graduate and certificate programs in a wide range of disciplines that includes Accounting, Business, Education, Information Technology, Psychology – and more. Review a complete list of programs.

Capella University offers more than 1,250 online courses, and 42 undergraduate and graduate degree programs in 137 specialized areas of study. Capella's more than 37,100 learners include a diverse group of adults from all 50 states and 52 countries.

You can sample some of Capella’s course offerings for free online.

Capella University is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA).
