What is the Benefit of Taking College Prep Classes?

StraighterLine college prep classes are for anyone getting ready for college, whether you are 16 or 36. Worried about writing college essays? Have a fear of math? Maybe it’s been a while since you’ve been in school and you just need a refresher. Maybe you’re a parent of a high schooler headed to college and you want to help them start strong. That’s where college prep comes in. StraighterLine offers two college prep courses, Developmental Writing and Introductory Algebra, classes that can help students build a strong foundation for college success. Introductory Algebra is for students looking to gain college-ready math skills and prepare for College Algebra. It’s ideal for students who have not taken a math class in a long time or want to gain confidence in their math skills prior to entering college. Developmental Writing is for students looking to enhance their overall writing ability and learn strategies for writing within multiple disciplines and professions. This course is perfect for students who want to polish their writing skills and gain the skills necessary to excel in their college writing courses, including English Composition I. Our college prep classes offer an experience that is more convenient, more flexible, and ideal for students who want to start college off on the right foot.

What features I can expect to see in these introductory math and writing classes that will help me succeed?

We have a 24/7 available Tutoring Center which provides you access to draft feedback, helpful videos and assignment guides, and an evaluation process that’s both objective and efficient. You can also get assistance with math assignments and real-time help as you work through your coursework. Timely feedback allows students to complete assignments quickly and at their own pace.

What kind of work and assignments should I expect?

Students can expect assignments that are clear, engaging, and even a little bit of fun (yes, math and writing can be fun)! In Introductory Algebra, you’ll learn the basics of algebra. Using real-life scenarios, this course puts math concepts into understandable terms. You will learn math vocabulary and notations, including operations with numbers, fractions, decimals, percentages, and quadratic equations. You will also learn to read and interpret graphs. In Developmental Writing, you’ll examine the fundamental process, theories, and methods that enhance a student's writing ability. You will draft and revise sentences, paragraphs, and essays. You will also learn how to improve sentence structure and clarity using grammar, punctuation, and word choice.

How quickly will I have to complete assignments?

There are no homework deadlines or required hours; students work at their own pace. The courses are always available online so you can go as fast as you want, whenever you want.
