College Algebra is one of the most commonly required general education courses in American higher education, and for many students it is also one of the most avoidable expenses on the way to a degree. According to data from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), college algebra and introductory mathematics remain a universal core general education tracking benchmark across nearly all institutional profiles.³¹ Enrolling in a full-tuition, full-semester section to satisfy a single math prerequisite is, for a large share of students, money spent on a requirement rather than an education.

This article evaluates courses that earn transferable college credit only. It does not cover enrichment platforms, test-prep apps, or high school Algebra 1 courses; every provider on this list issues either a college transcript, an ACE credit recommendation, an NCCRS credit recommendation, or a CLEP exam pathway that a receiving institution can evaluate for transfer.

The market for online College Algebra breaks down into three distinct credit pathways:

1. Institutional transcripts: the course is recorded directly on a university's own transcript (ASU Universal Learner, BYU Independent Study, Independent Study in Idaho, UC San Diego Extended Studies, UND Enroll Anytime).
2. ACE or NCCRS credit recommendations: an independent evaluator recommends the course for credit, and the receiving school decides whether to accept it (StraighterLine, TEL Education, Coopersmith Career Consulting, Davar Academy).

For this report, our research team compiled and analyzed 10 online College Algebra providers between March 2026 and June 2026, drawing on provider websites, institutional fee schedules, and third-party credit-recommendation databases including NCCRS. We built an algorithm around five weighted criteria to benchmark each provider's dataset of pricing, support, and credit terms:

• Credit Transferability (30%) - Will the credit actually count at the student's school?
• Total Cost (All-In) (25%) -The full cost picture: enrollment, course, exam, and transcript fees
• Learner Support Quality (20%) - Tutoring, human advisors, and instructor access vs. static self-study materials
• Scheduling Flexibility (15%) - True self-pacing vs. fixed semester windows
• Course Rigor and Academic Credibility (10%) - ACE/NCCRS alignment, faculty involvement, and exam standards

Best Online College Algebra Courses: Full Rankings

In the table below, we rank the 10 best online College Algebra courses for college credit based on our weighted evaluation across the five criteria above. Rankings reflect an aggregated score; some providers that rank lower overall may rank higher within a specific subcategory.

StraighterLine, for affordable transferable College Algebra credit

StraighterLine is an online course provider where students earn credits through StraighterLine and transfer them to their degree-granting institution.²⁶ The platform offers 80+ self-paced courses across general education, nursing prerequisites, business, math, science, and IT, and its courses are reviewed and recommended for credit by the American Council on Education.⁴ College Algebra (MAT101) carries an active ACE recommendation, and StraighterLine advertises that most students complete a course in about 28 days, with no fixed deadlines.³

What separates StraighterLine from most other providers in this analysis is the size of its transfer infrastructure: more than 180 official partner institutions (plus credit acceptance at an additional 3,000 colleges and universities).² Students pay a monthly membership of $99 plus a per-course fee starting at $79, which includes a free digital textbook, on-demand Tutor.com tutoring, and free unlimited transcript delivery.¹

ASU Universal Learner, for a low-risk path to an official ASU transcript

ASU Universal Learner Courses let students take Arizona State University's own online College Algebra course, MATH 117, without formal admission to the university.⁵ Enrollment costs $25, and the course only carries an academic consequence if the student chooses to add it to an official ASU transcript for an additional $400 after finishing.⁵  Because students only pay the credit fee if they are satisfied with their grade, the financial risk of trying the course is limited to the $25 enrollment fee.

The tradeoff is that transferability outside of ASU is not guaranteed. An ASU transcript carries the university's HLC regional accreditation, which supports credibility with many receiving schools, but as with any institutional transcript, individual registrars decide case by case whether the specific course fits their degree requirements.⁶ Support comes from ASU's own faculty and instructional staff rather than a dedicated tutoring service, and the course follows a defined academic calendar rather than the fully open-ended pacing found at some competitors.⁷⁸

Modern States is a nonprofit that offers free, professor-taught online courses aligned to College Level Examination Program (CLEP) exams, including a course that prepares students for the College Algebra CLEP.⁹ Students who complete the course and score at least 75% on quizzes and the final exam receive a voucher that covers the CLEP exam fee.⁹ CLEP credit itself is accepted for consideration at roughly 2,900 U.S. colleges and universities, making it one of the most broadly recognized credit-by-exam pathways in the country.¹⁰

The tradeoff for the zero-dollar price tag is a support model built entirely around self-study. There is no tutoring or academic advising, and the credit is indirect: passing the Modern States course does not itself generate credit, only eligibility for a free CLEP exam attempt, and the student must still pass that separately administered, proctored exam.⁹ For students who thrive independently and simply need to save money, it is difficult to beat on cost; for students who need structured support, the total absence of instructor contact is a real limitation.

BYU Independent Study, for a recognized university transcript with a text-first format

BYU Independent Study is the distance-education division of Brigham Young University, offering a College Algebra course (MATH 110) that appears on an official BYU transcript.¹²¹³ Current university-course tuition is $256 per credit hour, which puts the 3-credit course at $768.¹² Students have up to 12 months to complete the course, and the BYU Math Lab and instructor office hours provide some structured academic support that pure self-study competitors lack.¹²¹⁴

Independent reviewers who cover BYU Independent Study consistently describe the format as text-heavy and print-based rather than interactive, with some courses shipping physical binders of practice material.¹⁴ That format works well for self-directed students comfortable learning from reading, and less well for students who expect a more multimedia-driven online course experience.¹⁴ As with any institutional-transcript pathway, students should confirm with their receiving school in advance whether a BYU Independent Study course will satisfy their specific degree requirement.

Independent Study in Idaho (ISI) is a cooperative of regionally accredited Idaho institutions, led by the University of Idaho and established in 1973.¹⁶ Undergraduate courses cost $160 per credit hour plus a $30 processing fee, putting a 3-credit College Algebra course at $510.¹²5 Courses are open enrollment with no admission requirement, and students have up to 12 months to complete their coursework.¹⁵

Because ISI courses are sponsored by one of several cooperating institutions rather than a single national brand, the specific transcript a student receives depends on which school sponsors the course section, and students should confirm which institution's transcript they will receive and how the destination school will treat it before registering.¹⁶ Support is available through direct instructor contact, but ISI does not appear to offer a dedicated tutoring program comparable to StraighterLine's Tutor.com access or BYU's Math Lab.¹⁵

TEL Education is an Oklahoma City-based nonprofit that offers online general-education courses, including College Algebra, at approximately $67 per credit hour, or roughly $200 for a 3-credit course, compared to a reported average of about $113 per credit hour at community colleges.¹⁷ Credit is issued through one of TEL's regionally accredited partner universities rather than through TEL itself, and the organization has built partnerships with dozens of colleges specifically to support students who might not otherwise consider college financially accessible.¹⁷

Because credit is mediated through a partner institution rather than a single national brand, acceptance outside that partner network is not guaranteed and should be confirmed with the receiving school in advance.¹⁷ TEL does not appear to offer dedicated tutoring, relying instead on self-paced coursework and webcam-proctored exams.¹⁷

Davar Academy, for low-cost NCCRS credit with at-home proctoring

Davar Academy is an NCCRS member since November 2016 offering a College Algebra course (listed as MAT 201, previously titled Algebra MAT 201) evaluated for lower- or upper-division credit.¹⁸ Reported pricing for Davar's flat-rate courses varies meaningfully depending on the source and date consulted, ranging from roughly $70 to $150 per course; because this figure could not be verified directly against Davar's current live pricing at time of writing, it should be confirmed before publishing.¹⁸¹⁹ Exams are proctored at home using webcam-based tools, with the option of a local in-person proctor.¹⁹

The more important caveat for this provider is credit acceptance. NCCRS recommendations are considered by roughly 1,200 to 1,500 cooperating institutions nationally, a meaningfully smaller pool than ACE-recommended credit, and at least one independent reviewer has noted that Davar has not maintained a confirmed regionally accredited partnership at various points, meaning students should verify a specific receiving school's willingness to accept Davar credit before enrolling.¹⁸¹⁹²⁹

Coopersmith Career Consulting, for a large NCCRS catalog at a flat per-credit rate

Coopersmith Career Consulting has been an NCCRS member since June 2013 and offers a College Algebra course (MAT-101) evaluated for credit at $50 per credit hour, putting a 3-credit course at $150.²⁰²¹ The provider markets specific transfer relationships with schools such as Thomas Edison State University, Excelsior University, and Ana G. Mendez University, and states that some of these partners will accept a substantial share of a bachelor's degree in NCCRS-recommended credit.²¹

As with Davar Academy, the tradeoff is that NCCRS credit has narrower acceptance than ACE-recommended credit, and Coopersmith does not offer live tutoring; students work from self-study materials and sit an at-home proctored exam once they feel prepared.²¹ Students planning to use Coopersmith credit outside of its named partner schools should confirm acceptance with their target institution before enrolling.

UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies, for the highest institutional prestige on this list

UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies offers degree-credit coursework that can, in some cases, be applied toward a degree subject to approval by the receiving institution.²² It carries the most recognizable academic brand of any provider on this list. However, UCSD's own Mathematics Department FAQ states plainly that certain Extended Studies course levels are not UC-transferable and that the department cannot grant equivalency for non-UC-transferable Extended Studies coursework, which means prospective students need to verify, course by course, whether a specific Extended Studies math offering will count toward their goal before enrolling.²³

Extended Studies courses are priced individually rather than per unit, and exact current pricing for a College Algebra-equivalent course was not independently confirmed at the time of this writing.²² Courses run on a quarterly academic calendar with defined start and end dates, making this the least flexible option in this comparison, and instruction is instructor-facilitated rather than fully self-directed.²²

UND Enroll Anytime, for a traditional university extension experience

UND Enroll Anytime is the University of North Dakota's self-paced extension program, offering MATH 103: College Algebra as a 3-credit course that appears on an official UND transcript exactly as a normally scheduled course would.²⁴ Tuition is billed at UND's in-state rate of $407.97 per credit, or $1,223.91 for the 3-credit course, plus a one-time $35 non-refundable application fee, making it the most expensive option evaluated in this report.²⁴ Students have up to 9 months to complete the course, using Cengage WebAssign courseware and Honorlock proctoring for exams.²⁴

The course is not eligible for federal or state financial aid because it falls outside standard semester enrollment, and as with any institutional-transcript pathway, acceptance at a different receiving school is not automatic.²⁵ For students who specifically want a traditional-looking university transcript with structured coursework and don't need to minimize cost, UND offers HLC-accredited rigor at the tradeoff of the highest price point in this comparison.
