National Distance Learning Week: November 8-12, 2010
“Online learning programs are invaluable because they provide a segment of our population with critical literacy and job-related skills as well as the means necessary to take their education to the next level. As President Kennedy once said: `Let us think of education as the means of developing our greatest abilities, because in each of us there is a private hope and dream which, fulfilled, can be translated into benefit for everyone and greater strength for our nation.’ For millions of students worldwide, these dreams are being realized through the use of distance learning technologies, allowing them to fulfill their own personal and educational ambitions."
-The late Senator Edward M. Kennedy in a letter written to The United States Distance Learning Association on November 12, 2007
National Distance Learning Week, sponsored by the United States Distance Learning Association, will be held November 8-12, 2010. The week will be packed with webinars and special online events. (After all, the celebration is all about distance learning, right?)
According to NDLW, the weeklong event, “seeks to promote and celebrate the tremendous growth and accomplishments occurring today in distance learning programs offered by schools, businesses, and governmental departments.”
Here are some of NDLW’s stated reasons for holding the event again this year . . .
- More than 3.5 million college students are currently taking online courses and/or earning college degrees online.
- More than 700,000 high school students are taking one or more courses online.
- Nearly 40 states have now established virtual schools.
- In 2007, Michigan became the first state to require high school students take at least one online course before graduation.
No question about it – distance learning is moving to center stage in American higher education. If you’re a proud StraighterLine distance learner, be sure to check out what’s happening at National Distance Learning Week this year.
