Now that StraighterLine also offers professor-led online college courses, we thought you might want to know a little more about our professors. We’ve asked each of them to answer a series of questions to help you decide whether you want to enroll in their courses or stick with our more traditional self-paced courses. As with everything else here at StraighterLine, like publishing student course ratings and average pass rates, our goal is to give you the information you need to make the right choices for you.
And with that, it’s time for you to get to know Professor Corrine Hasbany:
What excites you about StraighterLine’s Professor Direct
Professor Direct provides students the opportunity to experience courses as if they were enrolled in an online degree program. It is a wonderful platform for students to “see” what a professor led online course is like. I am excited about sharing my accounting and finance experiences with students who may be thinking of going back to school for accounting/finance as well as those students that are considering a career change to the accounting field. We could always use a few more accountants in the world.
What course/s do you teach at StraighterLine and why should students signup for them?
I currently teach Accounting 1. Accounting is important not only in business but also in our everyday life. I believe all students, no matter what their major or career path is, should take an accounting course to gain an understanding of how accounting is used as well as how it can be of assistance to them.
What do you like about teaching online that you can’t do in a traditional classroom?
Teaching online allows me to share my experiences and knowledge with students from all over the world. The online classroom extends far beyond the four walls of a traditional classroom and allows me to interact with students from all walks of life. We all have experiences and knowledge to share and the online environment provides me the opportunity to not only teach, but also learn from the diversity of my students’ knowledge and experiences.
Why did you become a professor? What motivated you to become a teacher?
Being in the accounting and finance field, I feel very strongly that business students should be exposed to “real life” accounting/finance and business scenarios. Text books provide the concepts and formulas but working in a corporate accounting/finance department is very different. No text book can explain or share the various transactions and situations that occur in corporate accounting. Bringing a blend of real life and text book accounting is what motivated me to teach. I also like interacting and learning from my students and I am honored to be a part of their education.
What is your favorite way to learn? Do you recommend this to students?
My favorite way to learn is by doing. By this I mean, practicing various accounting problems within the materials covered and by recreating situations that may occur in order to understand how to work them. I do recommend this to students as it helps to retain course materials as well as provides a point of reference to relate to which also helps in understanding the course concepts.
Tell us about your favorite hobby or your favorite way to spend time away from work.
I love spending time with my family and our Labrador at the beach. I am also an avid runner and enjoy running races as well as watching any NFL team on Sundays.
