  • It’s Time to Protect College Students!

    Barry Lenson

It’s Time to Protect College Students from Binge Drinking, Hazing, and Sexual Assaults Are American college students safe on campus? Apparently not. Here are some stories that have been making the news recently. Hazing at the University of Binghamton The University of Binghamton, regarded as one of the jewels in the State University of New York (SUNY) system, is in crisis over widespread hazing in fraternities and sororities. You can read about it in “At a Campus Scarred by Hazing, Cries for Help,” a story that Peter Applebome wrote in the New York Times on September 18th.  Applebome reports that students who choose to take part in Greek life on campus are incurring serious physical injuries from being forced to craw ...

  • 10 Things You Won’t Need if You Are a StraighterLine Student

    Barry Lenson

Did you see all the ALUAGOCCS (All Loaded Up and Going to College Cars) on the highway a few weeks ago? You couldn’t miss `em, even if you were driving behind. They had new college stickers applied to their back windows, and they were so overstuffed with dorm stuff that whoever was driving couldn’t see out the back window. As you pulled out to pass, you caught a glimpse of a dorm fridge, floppy bags full of shoes and sweaters, a pole lamp, a leopard-print ottoman, and a huge stuffed animal that stared out the side window with wide, frightened eyes like the lady in Edward Munch’s painting “The Scream.” If you are a StraighterLine student, you just saved a fortune, because you didn’t need to buy all that stuff before you sta ...

Hate Computers? You Will Love Online Courses Anyway I met a retired man recently who said to me, “online courses aren’t for me! I can’t even log onto Wi-Fi in hotel rooms or check my email most of the time. My grandson comes over to clean out my email once a month. But when you come down to it, recent advances in computers systems have been all about making it easier to use computers, not harder. If you sign up for any courses at StraighterLine, for example, you are going to find it easy and transparent to handle the technical side of your learning experience. But if those reassurances don’ ...

  • Avoid Multitasking while Studying Online

    Barry Lenson

Avoid Multitasking while Studying Online A few years ago, just about every job posting or ad said that successful applicants “must be able to multitask.” I don’t know if you’ve noticed it or not, but those words don’t appear too often in ads these days. Maybe that’s because lots of unfortunate things have been happening when people multitask. The most notable disasters occur when people drive while texting or talking on their phones. But there are other situations where multitasking causes problems too. A lot of them center on computer use. If you’ve watched a high-school or college-aged student working at a computer, you might have seen an example of the kind of multitasking that I am referring to. (I am not saying tha ...
