Colleges "have set the bar pretty low for competitors" through a lack of competition says Kevin Carey. At the same time, many potential students are being underserved. "We need more institutions that are good at serving working students, immigrant students, low-income students, students who are basically going to college because they want to get a credential and have a career," he says. Carey points to the fledgling company StraighterLine.com, which offers college courses in subjects from algebra to business statistics, English composition, and accounting. Students can take as many courses as they want for $99 per month, the company's website says. The price includes 10 hours each month of one-on-one live support and a course adviser. Passing courses results in "real college credit" from one of several colleges affiliated with the program.

Earn college credits at thousands of colleges with StraighterLine's online college courses.
Choose:
A) Apply to one of StraighterLine's Partner Colleges.
If you want to speed your enrollment and acceptance apply to one of StraighterLine's Partner Colleges. StraighterLine's partner colleges are all accredited, and have all agreed to award college credits directly for StraighterLine online distance learning courses.
OR
B) Any school that awards college credits for courses evaluated by the American Council on Education's (ACE) Credit Recommendation Service.
Thousands of colleges award credit for ACE evaluated courses. To be sure about a specific college, check the website or call the college where you wish to enroll and ask if they accept ACE recommended coursework. To use the ACE process:
- Be sure the college in which you want to enroll will accept ACE recommended courses. If not, consider one of StraighterLine's Partner Colleges. A list of ACE affiliated schools can be found here.
- Successfully complete a StraighterLine college course (70% or higher final average).
- Alert the StraighterLine course advisor that you want your StraighterLine college credit listed on an ACE transcript.
- ACE will send you a confirmation email with a link for you to follow to login. If you do not already have an ACE account, StraighterLine will provide you with a student ID that you will use to login. ACE charges $40 to create an account. If you already have an ACE account, you will use your Social Security Number to login. Please tell your Course Advisor your Social Security Number so they can send your course completion information to ACE. StraighterLine will not store your social security number.
