See how StraighterLine demonstrates course quality

Unlike most colleges, StraighterLine has submitted its courses to multiple independent reviews that are all accepted methods of determining higher education course quality.

Materials you use to learn.  Our courses are no different than those offered throughout higher education by accredited colleges and universities... except, of course, our prices!  Our course content comes from proven providers such as text book giant McGraw-Hill.  We provide on-demand one-to-one online tutoring from subject matter experts through leading tutoring provider SMARTHINKING (besides StraighterLine, more than 500 colleges and universities use SMARTHINKING for tutoring services) – in many instances providing much more access than you would ever get to your professor in a traditional live on-campus lecture class.  We use learning management system Blackboard, the leading provider to non-profit colleges and universities.

Partner college scrutiny.  Although we are not eligible to be reviewed for accreditation, all of our partner colleges are.  Each of our partner colleges in the US has regional accreditation, and as a group represents five of the six accreditation regions.  Before joining us as a partner college, an institution reviews our courses to ensure they meet the standards they have set for their own coursework.

ACE CREDIT.  Many examples exist of learning done outside the traditional college and university setting being recognized for real college credit (ie, work training, military training, credit-by-exam, etc.).  For decades, colleges and universities have trusted ACE to provide reliable course equivalency information to facilitate credit award decisions.  There are over 1200 colleges that profess to award credit for courses recommended by ACE CREDIT.  All of StraighterLine’s college-level courses have been reviewed and recommended for credit by ACE CREDIT.

DETC.  The Distance Education and Training Council is a federally recognized accrediting association for distance education and training institutions worldwide.  At our request, DETC agreed to review our courses (something no other accrediting body has been willing to do) and determined that they “meet DETC’s standards for online learning”.

AP Program courses*. More than 90 percent of four-year colleges in the United States and colleges in more than 60 other countries give students credit, advanced placement or both on the basis of AP Exam scores.   Many of StraighterLine courses have been reviewed and authorized by the College Board as AP Program courses. The College Board has an audit process it created at the request of both secondary schools and college members of the College Board who sought a means for the College Board to:

  • Provide AP teachers and administrators with clear guidelines on curricular and resource requirements that must be in place for AP courses.
  • Give colleges and universities confidence that AP courses are designed to meet the same clearly articulated college-level criteria across high schools.

StraighterLine has submitted and received approval for the following StraighterLine courses to be listed as AP courses:

  • Economics I: Macroeconomics
  • Economics II: Microeconomics
  • English Composition
  • General Calculus I
  • Introduction to Psychology
