About Western Governors University (WGU)
WGU was created to expand access to higher education, offering accredited bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in information technology, business, teacher education, and health professions (including nursing). It’s a great fit for busy adults thanks to its competency-based learning model, flat-rate tuition (less than $6,000 a year for most programs), and unique one-on-one faculty mentoring.
What makes WGU different? The competency-based learning model measures student success by learning, not seat time, class attendance, or credit hours. A student earns a degree by demonstrating skills and knowledge in required subject areas through a series of carefully designed courses. The advantage to this approach is straightforward—students are rewarded for hard work and prior experience. They’re not required to spend a lot of time on subjects they’ve already mastered, allowing them to focus on the areas where they need to develop competency.
Affordable, flat-rate tuition is another differentiator for WGU. Tuition is exceptionally budget-friendly. In fact, it’s typically less than half of what students would pay at other reputable online universities. Tuition is charged at a flat rate every six months and covers all coursework attempted in that time. Students don’t pay for courses or credit hours, so if they complete more coursework in a term, they can save time and money. Most degree programs are less than $3,000 per six-month term.
WGU assigns a mentor to every student. This faculty member provides motivation, guidance, and support from the moment a student is enrolled to the time he or she graduates. This student–mentor relationship fosters a more open connection between the student and the university even though study is independent and online.
WGU’s degree programs are accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. The teaching degree programs are NCATE accredited, the nursing degree programs are CCNE* accredited, and the health informatics degree program is CAHIIM accredited.
