Wayne Brown has worked in law enforcement over 25 years. He’s getting ready to retire from his first career, but in order to prepare for his next, he knows he needs a college degree. “I plan on continuing to work in a criminal justice related field, but it’s kind of strange,” says Wayne, “to find myself towards the end of my first career at the age of 46, and preparing for my next job.”
Expanding Career Opportunities with a Bachelor’s Degree
Wayne had already earned his associate degree in 2006, but wanted to earn his bachelor’s degree in order to expand career opportunities after retirement from his current job.
He started doing some research, and began looking into transfer-friendly degree program options online. He found exactly what he was looking for with StraighterLine partner college Liberty University Online. “I was able to easily transfer my associate degree credits to Liberty,” said Wayne. “They also gave me a fair amount of Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) credit as well. As a result, in order to earn my bachelor’s degree, I really only needed to complete about 18 classes total at the school.”
Finding a Flexible Way to Earn College Credit Online
According to Wayne, “things were going great” at Liberty until, about halfway through his degree program, he realized that if he could finish one course, English Composition II (3 credits), at an accelerated rate, in addition to his regular course load, he would be able to graduate a semester early.
So Wayne called his academic advisor and explained the situation. That’s when he learned about StraighterLine as a convenient option for Liberty students to earn college credit for their degree. His advisor explained how StraighterLine is a partner with Liberty, which meant he could get “guaranteed transfer credit for certain classes, including English courses.” After taking a look at Liberty University Online’s course equivalency guide with StraighterLine, Wayne decided to enroll in StraighterLine’s English Composition II so he could complete his English class over break.
“After my advisor recommended that I take English Composition at StraighterLine,” said Wayne, “I enrolled right away.” He added, “I liked that I could work at my own pace. I am a Type A personality. I like pushing myself. In a lot of classes, you are kind of limited -- you work along at the pace of the slowest learner. It can get frustrating if you’d like to get ahead ahead and stay challenged.”
Advice to Other Adults Considering Earning Their College Degree
“If you are looking to save some money and time, StraighterLine is a very good alternative to taking a course at your college. My Liberty classes average about $1,000 a class, but for less than $150 bucks, I was able to get a required class out of way cheaply and quickly through StraighterLine.”
Wayne will earn his Bachelor’s of Criminal Justice at Liberty University Online in August 2016. Thanks to StraighterLine, he conveniently completed the English Composition course he needed to graduate on his schedule. Congratulations, Wayne!
