A working nurse decided to take charge of his career by earning his Bachelors of Science in Nursing, all while working full-time and supporting a family of five. We’re excited to share Gene G.’s story with you:
Advancing a Career in Nursing
Gene knew he needed to earn a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) to advance his career. He had worked as a nurse for over 15 years with an Associates Degree in Nursing, but changes in the industry motivated him to go back to school.
“I noticed a trend that large employers and hospitals were requiring nurses to get their BSN,” says Gene. “I work at a large local hospital, and if I switch departments, I’m required to earn my BSN.”
While not yet required by his employer, Gene determined he would ultimately need his BSN to further his career – and set a goal to complete his degree within two years.
Choosing a Degree Program
At first, Gene enrolled in courses at a local community college, but withdrew when he realized he needed something more flexible. “I work more than full-time, I have a family of five,” says Gene. “I need something with flexibility so I can make time for everything.”
He went online to explore BSN options and found a forum for nursing students, where he discovered Western Governors University (WGU), a StraighterLine Partner College. Gene thought the nursing degree program would be a great fit, and decided to pursue his BSN at the school.
Taking Advantage of Flexible Classes
A Student Advisor helped him create a degree plan – so he knew exactly which courses at StraighterLine would transfer to his nursing degree program at WGU.
“When I enrolled in StraighterLine courses, I didn’t have a particular plan,” he says. “I took it one class at a time and went from there. I started with US History I and finished in two weeks.”
Completing 4 Courses in 1 Month
With motivation and dedication, Gene completed 4 StraighterLine courses in 1 month. “Any free time I had, I was reading. Because the courses were self-paced, I was really dedicated and organized. I knew I had to get this done and put 100% into it. ”
Through StraighterLine’s partnership with WGU, Gene was able to quickly and affordably complete his prerequisite courses before enrolling in WGU’s BSN program.
The Path to College Success
After completing his StraighterLine courses, Gene successfully transferred to Western Governors University, where he is currently enrolled in their BSN program. He plans to graduate in 2016. Congratulations, Gene!
