Earn the Right Nursing Certification to Speed Your Success

Earn a Nursing Certification“I want to become a licensed medical perfusionist” says Julie Huong, a health care aide who lives in Nevada. “I am studying for my state’s licensing exam, but it has been hard to figure out what qualifications I need to earn my certification. I earned an Associate’s degree in pharmacy science a few years ago, but that doesn’t seem to count toward the credentials that I need to earn certification.”

Julie isn’t the only health care professional who thinks that licensing requirements are confusing.  Perhaps you do too. Whether you are hoping to enter the nursing field as a Nursing Assistant (NA) or move up from being an NA to become a Licensed Professional Nurse (LPN), it can be difficult to find out what your next steps are in the state where you live.

Here’s a simple process that can help you determine what you need to do to obtain the nursing certification that you’re seeking in your state.

Step One: Find Out What Your State Requires for the Certification You Are Seeking

These two online directories will help you quickly find the information you need about licensing and certification exams and requirements in your state . . .

  • Nurse.org offers an online directory of national and state nursing organizations that is easy to search.
  • The Federation of State Medical Boards offers a similar online directory where you can locate your state’s medical board.

Step Two: Learn about the Exams You Need to Take

For example, Julie Huong could contact the Nevada Nurses Association and the Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners and ask about the specific requirements to obtain licensure as a perfusionist in her state. She can find out more about what will be on the test that she needs to take as well as testing dates and other details.

Step Three: Start Studying and Preparing!

Depending on your career objective in nursing, you might be able to find a book that will help you study for the exam you need to take. Example:  A book called CNA Certified Nursing Assistant Exam Cram will help you prepare for most CNA certification exams.

In many cases, however, there is no substitute for online courses. StraighterLine offers a number of terrific, self-paced online courses that can help you prepare for your exams. They include . . .
